FPIFGM069A Trim and Cross-cut felled trees (Basic Chainsaw Operation)
This Unit of Competency has been developed to increase the level of awareness in general safety, and to assist the chainsaw operator in adopting safe and efficient working techniques.
During the decades prior to 1990, timber industry workers suffered horrific injuries and sometimes death due to chainsaw operation. Workers were experiencing cuts from revolving sawchain when a chainsaw “kick-back” occurred, or were killed by falling trees or dislodged limbs due to unsafe felling techniques.
“Safe Systems of Work” for chainsaw operation were developed and introduced to the timber industry in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Since then the frequency and severity of chainsaw-related accidents have steadily declined.
